Card from our relief print making class.

I know Valentine’s Day is in the past but it’s never too late to spread some love right? Last Friday I took a relief print making class where we made Valentine’s Day cards. It’s always nice (and therapeutic) to recognize your negative self-talk when doing art amongst friends. I am deeply critical of my own abilities, and I know, art is subjective etc. etc. but it’s just not something that comes naturally to me. I’m fine with that!

I love doing art with friends because they always check me as I’m blurting out how much my piece sucks (and tbh sometimes they do, it’s fine), but it’s still nice to have your friends remind you to stop being so self-critical (I am incredibly good at that!).

My friends are also very creative and artistic, so while they’re banging out super cool stuff, I’m usually staring blankly into space trying to come up with something halfway decent (this is why I enjoy knitting). When I was younger that might have made me frustrated or insecure, but at 41, it just makes me really grateful to have friends that are so cool, and funny, and talented. I might not be good at art, but I’m good at making friends who are, and that feels like a pretty special talent. 😇
