A gallery in our community covers the walls in canvas so everyone can come and paint.

We survived February break, including a trip to a minor hockey league game that felt more like a WWE match 🫠 On our drive home yesterday I could feel the rise of existential dread as the sky started to spit and turn gray. My inner monologue was a mix of “March sucks” and “everything is terrible.”

Aside from the (waves arms around) awful state of things, March can be a hard month in Vermont. We’ve made it through 4 months of winter, only to acknowledge that it’s nowhere near over. As I was sitting in the front seat quietly making a mental checklist of everything I loathe about the month and this season, Marin made a song request, Roll Up by the Elovaters.

All of a sudden I was tapping my foot and nodding my head to the beat. Their music always reminds me of summer. I started thinking about those occasional warm days in March that feel so good. I opened my weather app and saw the extended forecast, a few days in the high 50s and even low 60s (!!!). I started thinking about spring skiing, and sugaring season, days getting longer, and more sunlight.

Last week we went to our community gallery where they cover the walls in canvas so everyone can come and paint. I stood there frozen, unable to decide how I wanted to start (painting is not my thing). Marin wanted to paint a lemon tree and immediately got to work. “I love how you just start Marin, I can never decide what to do,” I said. “Well if I mess up my lemon tree, I can just turn it into something else,” she replied.

If you mess up, you can try again. If your inner monologue is dragging you down, throw on some music and see what happens. I’m ready for Marin’s return to school and some semblance of a routine, but I sure did enjoy my little daily dose of perspective.
