Just as it’s starting to feel like summer, we’re headed into a week of 90 degree weather in Vermont. A place where most people don’t have air conditioning because historically it never got hot enough to need it. Meanwhile France is having its most severe and widespread heatwave in history, reaching temperatures that would have been nearly impossible just 50 years ago, and which scientists predicted would not happen until 2050.
The US is more responsible for climate change than any other country, but the Trump administration has gone all in on fossil fuels, and Trump continues to call the climate crisis a hoax.
At the same time, former NOAA employees (laid off last year as part of DOGE cuts) launched a new website Climate.us, to fill the void left when Climate.gov was shut down by the Trump administration. A federal court also ordered the Trump administration to restore signs about climate change and Indigenous history it had removed from Acadia National Park.
The Trump administration can take down websites and censor climate speech, but it doesn’t change the fact that the climate crisis is here. This is, whether we want to acknowledge it or not, the new normal. Are we willing to accept that?
